A Conversation with Mohammad Parvizi about Video Performance “Come Closer…” Javad Soroush | Art Critic
Introduction: The great number of visitors in different days of performance who exited the designed halls and entered the scene from the other side immediately, was expressive of simplicity and a desire to further experience to me for discovering more inner layers from the addressee’s position; the simplicity not being created easily. I was rather aware of the work’s development and process from early days of its idea formation due to the conversations I had with Mohammad Parvizi; a work of art which caused various crises for the artist in different steps. I remember I did not hear anything from him for three months. He did not answer any of his phone calls and this held for the rest of his friends. Later we knew that he had been writing this work’s scenario and did not have the possibility for any communication with the outside. On the other hand, he was looking for a sponsor during a couple months too. I was accompanying him as a guest, and not a coworker, just in a short time for sound recording. He had rented Bell studio for a full day in order to record sounds with the best desired quality. It is understandable from here how much he has been aware and sensitive to different parts of the performance “Come Closer”. Hence for going through the simplicity of the work and realizing its intricacies in different parts, I decided to have a direct interview with him and offer questions about the various aspects of the performance.
Mr. Parvizi, your work contained various aspects, but the first step to see that was conditional of being swallowed in the designed space of vestibules, and this included only a part of the performance design. The other part was the LEDs settlements and division of the audience’s distance and his angle with performance elements. Would you please explain a little about the designing and installation process in this performance?
The performance Come Closer … is originally an interdisciplinary work of art. To examine that, we have to work on the quality and quantity of the fields combined separately, in order to understand how they are applied, or whether their application near each other has led to a further incident or not? I regard this decomposition as a useful point for understanding the work’s structure. But if we are supposed to mention decomposition of the work, we should return to the addressees’ personal perception and comprehension. I have to notify that viewer confronts the integrity of artwork through the sensory world; we can realize from feedbacks whether this interdisciplinary juxtaposition has managed to attain an independent piece of work or not? Fortunately I feel from the outcome of these feedbacks that I have proceeded well in this combination. I pointed this subject out in order to remind that all these components should take meaning in association with each other and repose on the work’s integrity. I have to come back to the first part of my speech, i.e. decomposing the work into its original components to make your conversation more clear. One of the important elements of this work is time and place. Works of art in a gallery are usually experienced by watching; therefore the galley gradually transfers into a familiar place for them to be seen. I tried to create a new space for the addressee’s visual experience by designing place. I went to Shirin gallery many times during several months and tried to disorder the addressee’s presupposition according to the capacity of that place and more importantly to surprise him or her at the very beginning. I generally believe that a work of art, among all the varieties and visual possibilities, should enjoy that much attraction to appear surprising for the viewer in the first look. Through this surrounding sense, we can expect him to start his mental intuitive dimensions with the theme of the work.
But you’ve not suffice to this. It means that you’ve changed the space of Shirin gallery in some way or other. What was this transposition for?
Interfering in place to reach this space began from outside the gallery until it moved towards all the fields there. Displacement of the addressee for watching the work from different angles in forms of high angle or low angle and also doing so from behind bars were other goals I was looking for. We even cut one the gallery’s walls to bring the addressee from the middle of gallery to the second floor. In the viewer’s course, there were some moments he dominated the scene and somewhere sound and picture did so. We made this by changing his viewpoint while walking in different levels we’d already created. In this way, the addressee apparently experienced Shirin galley’s space for the first time.
Did you have any special design for changing the gallery’s public space or you followed a particular architectural pattern?
Any work of art takes physical form according to its theme. Or according to Gabriel Garcia Marquez: “Any story has its particular technique. For a scenarist, the important matter is the discovery of that technique”. What we were looking for was a form of performance to associate a model of mind. The addressee was supposed to be placed in this mind, and by this presupposition, hear voices from a woman’s mind. Complex labyrinths and sometimes useless routes returned to their original position were designed for this purpose. In other words our pattern was the outside form of a mind which was delirious. Inside this mental space, the woman talks to herself. This is also a monolog of asking and answering. She speaks instead of other people and she replies by herself too. There are many ones in the woman’s mind; exactly the same as the structure of the model in which the addressee rotates. Viewers were caught in the totality of this made mind and were constantly going up and down. This performance allowed us to put the addressee inside the work, make them as a part of it and have them to experience that from a surrounded and internal space. I generally believe that if we work well or enough on the subject supposed to express and dominate, we can discover its outer pattern.
You’ve taken advantage of different elements in making this work: light, picture, installation, design, space division, actress’s action etc. But one of the most important parts was devoted to “voice”. It means once entering the vestibules; the addressee was exposed to direct “voices”: Pegah Ahangarani’s voice who had undertaken narrative part of the work and the musical instrument’s sound which was both recorded and played live by player Atena Eshtiyaghi in a particular place. It was clear from quality of the work that sounds and voices were recorded carefully in studio, and more important, those heard in different parts of work which were expressive of a precise and calculated design for the order of voices’ narration. Why do regard “voice” as much important as this? And how do you present narrative sections of your work by using the capacities of this medium?
It wasn’t very conscious of me to be attracted to voices. As soon as I came to myself, I realized how sounds have been this much influential in my life; memories I had left in sounds consisted the best moments of my life, and the ones reflected them consisted my most anxious seconds and hours and they still do. Perhaps that’s why I consciously and unconsciously return to sounds; sometimes for finding things I have lost in them and maybe for approaching the memories I’ve given them. Many times a piece of music has managed to penetrate me so easily which has aborted the moment’s being. Come Closer video performance is a work in realm of sounds and voices. I’ve to clarify myself about the concept of “voice” in here. I include any frequency here being able to refer us to something or make an atmosphere. When language is echoed and being resonant, it reaches sound, and it’s natural that music world represents the unique power of sounds without any speech. It can bring or keep different conditions of experiences into itself. That’s why memorial sounds come back again by an instance of this kind or become alive in the present. A woman talks to herself. Her dialog is a type of inner monolog in fact. We understand from questions and answers that she reminds some memories and even hears whatever one says. By language of mental conditions, hidden and occasionally shocking experiences approach her gradually. This confrontation wounds her and then language bell rings. At the moment in which memory is fully awake, inner feelings make the woman tremble. The cool and faint voice goes to the surface of the face little by little. Now the woman has frozen from inside to outside and that’s the very moment she does not remember the memory, but experiences it. Or she lives with that experience in her present time.
And what’s the role of music in this woman’s inner conversation?
All these events are accompanied by the sound of a musical instrument. A woman in white costume plays an elegy by Gabriel Fauré in Cm (C minor) scale. This piece of music incorporates all the memories that woman transfers to language surface. It seems as if this instrument is the main stimulus. The woman has left the memory in this piece. In fact, in real life, memories left behind in sounds are evoked and reminded by means of a piece of music or such kind of sounds. I tried to show that the woman is in a position dominant to picture. She’s seated on the main monitor and looks at the picture from a surface of glass totally covering under her feet and guides that. Where the woman evades speaking or prevents confronting the sounds, music still goes on and persuades her to face the memory. Sometimes language refuses to express perfectly all the things going through the mind, or simply speaking, the structure of language is in such a manner that passes over some things while bringing experience to consciousness or making them narrative; or even censors them due to fears growing of confrontation. As a result, this lingual resistance makes the player’s piece be subject to fluctuations. Therefore whenever language is altered or led to ambiguity, music faced disorder too. When the instrument returns to the piece again, language also becomes understandable in the woman’s words as if it’s dependent on sounds in this phase. Here music can confront the woman with experience. This coming and going was my principle objective to show that the memories which are left behind in sound encounter willing or unwilling changes when reaching the language to be narrated or returning to consciousness; they are censored and on the other hand, mechanism of the mind mingles them with other things. Whenever we got close to such a lingual mass in performance, music was disturbed too. It is true that sounds are reminiscent of memorials, but sometimes what we remember is so much or so close that covers our present time and brings about a shocking experience. It is exactly in this situation that language takes the lead, both from music as the main element and also the real experience; like delirium which occasionally throws lots of things to the surface of language; the things which can’t receive order and regularity by consciousness nor make their narration possible for being understood in mind.
What’s the reason for live presence of the actress in one of the rooms? I mean where was her reaction in front of viewer in the structure you explained?
Our actress (Pegah Ahangarani) is afflicted with delirium in the its room. In other words there is a field of performing where language is not limited to sounds or has just passes it. Here sounds grow louder. There is a telephone in front of her and the addressee can pick it up. By this action, all delirium stop and the main music which is the cause for reminding the memory is heard through the phone. The music piece is that of Gabriel Fauré which is played in the adjacent room by Atena Eshtiyaghi in a glass compartment. But the thing that is reminded no longer remains faithful to this piece. There is no logic in narrating the story the woman recounts according to this sound_ exactly the same as a woman’s struggle who is confined in a closed space and constantly repeats some things. I decided to show how music is dominant to narration in the first room, and how language has surpassed music in the other one and generally gained the control of experience. Simply speaking, I wanted to talk about the crisis of memories remained in sounds. Although sounds carry memories very hard, there is the fear that mind can’t analyze them for their state of inopportune and rush (since they are mingled with other things or they remind the experience according to pain). Delirium is expressive of the crisis I mentioned before.
It seems that you do not take your created “woman” to a definite point, that is to say, the narrative structure you’ve chosen does not push her forward both from viewpoint of narration and time, but continues a part of her past by that dominant form of work; the part which seems more pleasant to her. How far do you proceed with her?
What suggestion could be offered to a woman who has proceeded as deep as this in her experience? Or willingly and unwillingly has confronted the critical situation of that dream? Leaving her alone to herself or making her hopeful, are both dangerous things. I can’t approve of operating on someone’s soul and psyche or experience and leave the wound open. Hope was also a funny suggestion for the end of a story I wanted to narrate the depth of whose bitterness. Bringing her close to a warm memory- an apparently simple one- and whose experience, in my opinion, could get her warm from inside. The experience of embracing each other which was left in sounds, however being shocking, is in fact the most strange form of memories that sounds recount. Whatever uttered by the woman is seemingly felt by her in that moment; maybe a kind of self deceit to get released of oneself, or no, maybe trusting again and being set free for another time. I don’t know, perhaps they’re the best memories which help her through pains; a memory able to melt this inner ice. She constantly begs us to come closer … even closer …; this point is the warm body of the accident. Now the addressee, with this feeling, passes through the long and narrow hallway along sounds repeatedly saying: come closer … closer … it’s snowy outside … now you can … and he finally exits the work. He exits the work and leaves the sounds alone too.
To tell the truth, there were various contacts by people with your work. I sometimes came across some ones standing in rooms or vestibules while staying in that condition for more than one hour. Or even some traversed them for several times. I saw someone continually went far and came close in front of monitors and even I, despite prohibitions, once observed the work in opposite direction of the current movement. All these were expressive of the fact that as much as the addressee faced with the elements and sections of the work easily, he intended to understand the intricacies of that simple space too. In your opinion, is it the addressee’s duty to realize all the aspects and intricacies of the work?
Not at all. The addressee is not to realize all these matters, but he is free in his interpretations. It is naive of us to assume our work simple due to this reason. We’ll get to the intricacies of any simple work if we contemplate it a little. These are not supposed to appear as puzzles when transforming into an artwork. It is in different layers of these levels where our reasoning for choice and cause of the work we are going to do forms. A great deal of performance problems goes back to this point that we’ve not asked our works and not replied it before execution. We should have a deep understanding of work for offering questions. These questions push us forward and cause the formation of outer principles and form of work by reasoning, and having them built on a strong frame. The work’s inefficiency in most cases goes back to sensitive or superficial encountering with positions. I have no doubt that the energy of work is as much special in homogeneity and affinity as the amount we’ve put for understanding the subject. I was responsible to know how much I was engaged with the subject matter and how deep have demonstrated that. Any simple subject carries a history and background. On the other hand, understanding thematic dimensions help us be careful about finding the executive form and take subtle points into consideration. The method for applying mirrors in the course had a reason beyond visual aims. Mirrors confronted the confined people in the labyrinths with themselves in the same way the woman does in the totality of work. I concluded from this form of introspection that the theme of the work is confrontation. In all parts of work, the addressee was faced with himself by means of the mirrors and they could add to the ambiguity and sophistication of the labyrinths. The correct application of elements is of high importance even though they are simple and at hand. This was suggested to me by the theme of the work.
It is true that any work of art could be interpreted to the number of whose addressees, but I want to ask you about sharing this style of personal experiences in form of performance. To what level your work interacts historically and socially with extant experiences?
I basically follow my personal experiences and proceed with my work by reliance on personal experiences. In my opinion, we should express and share our personal experiences in a way that is applicable in a broader scope for the public. The prevailing aspect of Iranian art in past one or two decades has been engaged to a form of observing its collective identity; a process generally become epidemic. The borrowed satirizing of history and whatever we know as historical identity has changed into a current style and manner. The exotic aspects of these works, as much as being outstanding, will have good luck to be observed; and gallery holders will devote time for them; they’ll find their way toward famous museums in the world. What seen there of us, are just meaningless layers of Islamic-Iranian culture. A theme mixed with a thick tradition of superstitions, and a pile of decorative heritage, calligraphy, talisman, magic, etc. Harmful consequences of this process will confront us with damages in the course of time which could not be compensated. All are engaged in tradition with these works; our collective taboo tradition is taken into account in all of them. In sociology of such works, we encounter people who regrettably understand their present through the past or resort to them for solving their problems. The works show us a general picture of the society which is confirmed by them. A world with decorative attractions and racial attitudes and bias informs us of people whose minds are filled with deposits come from a long time ago despite living in today’s world. This past time takes root anywhere. Such a historical auction and a report of history never take us to the contemporary era, even if all works are hung in contemporary museums. The contemporary world is expanding personal experiences; the ones that seek whose questions not in the past but today. It even looks at the past from today’s perspective. Come Closer is an experience in the realm of the effects of sounds and the function between memory and its motivation. I associated this theme to the experience of a woman who hears these sounds from the depth of a society where she lives in. Although the referential signs of the work return to society and its current situation, its mechanism belongs to the contemporary world’s instructions in connection with sounds’ function and the way to remind experiences. The theme whose consequences and influences are challenged not by our historical world, but the contemporary critical one.
The work is in form of a monolog. In fact the character of the “woman” in your work is constantly talking to herself, that is to say, her great apprehension is conversation and she interacts with the extant reality in her hereby. She brings her past experiences to an objective field of reality. What’s the role the audience in this inner conversation?
Hearing is the moral aspect of the conversation; however we know that any conversation does not necessarily lead to hearing. A step before this, we have to learn how to hear oneself, and monolog is considered the presupposition for this case. A woman is talking to herself and even asking oneself instead of others. This kind of self-investigation was important to me in order to say that asking and hearing oneself is a form of confessing on one part. We should be able to ask oneself; ask and answer, and more important, hear oneself. On the other hand, this process is not a simple one. To understand the mechanism of crises and difficulties of such a process, I returned to the experiences of a woman whose problem was incidentally the matter of hearing. She, willingly or unwillingly, hears others through her speaking to oneself; unlike those who don’t hear or does not even attempt to do so. She is a woman who cannot get rid of hearing. Such a person always displaces some people with her. They reappear in unknown space and time. This type of aggression and participation in someone else is not the act of producing sound in her, but is the invasion with sounds. I wanted to speak about the problems of hearing ethics besides that. Dangerous events which sometimes sounds return; their power is sometimes so much that can’t be heard but experienced … this is the kind of confrontation of sounds’ catastrophe. A woman whose wounds gape by the return of sounds.
I want to enter into the subject “gender” in your work. The character talking to oneself in this work and with whom you’ve had experience is a “woman”. In your previous work, Imagination Lady, it was the same. How do you experience your mentality through the opposite sex? I mean exactly what opportunity does she provide that makes you experience your mentality in the form of “woman” despite physiological differences?
That’s an important question. Julia Kristeva made it clear for us that there isn’t a distinct system or structure from former ones yet to be able to demonstrate or narrate feminine experiences the same as the way experienced in them. Women and men make use of common methods and systems to express their ideas which are the same. We cannot distinguish any work of art to be feminine or masculine by itself. What we call feminist art history is just the feminine reading and observation of works. Only a part of the experiences the women have had in center of artwork could be considered feminine works with regard to special feminine features; as if genetic developments and sexual change have decreased the intensity of this distinction. Furthermore, anybody can express his or her narration of humanistic experiences. They can be feminine or masculine. But I have no doubt that women’s physical structure or feminine mechanism has made the perception of experiences different from men’s. Becoming mother is the process of bearing a creature in the body; however this is a natural matter for many women. But generally speaking, such experiences-willingly or unwillingly- affect or disorder the body at first and then the soul and psyche. This outer transformation for me who is watching her at a distance is really astonishing. In simple words, I realize the experiences through these outer events; those which put the body under pressure. Women are unique in natural representation of such moods and conditions in my opinion. Whenever I’ve had a tendency toward visualizing a pain or feeling that was extremely abstract, I’ve left it to a woman before being said, visited or seen. From this viewpoint, I’ve always praised the works of Andrei Tarkovsky: works which are full of memorable moments of feelings’ hesitation not expressed in words ever as they are watched. Mirror is an outstanding example of such experiences Tarkovsky represents by his actress Margarita Terekhova (Natalia). In video performance Come Closer … Pegah’s face demonstrates sounds heard from her inside.
But beyond the natural reflection of emotions, bewilderment of your actress’s countenance (Pegah Ahangarani), with visual transitions, has become manifest. I mean her face was gradually freezing.
That’s right. The addressee continually faced with monitors in the course. We had exhibited a single portrait in all the monitors; only their voices and dialogs changed on the basis of the position the addressee reached according to the scenario installation. There was a reason behind these fixed portraits. Firstly if the number of the actress’s actions or reactions increased or she had physical displacement, the audience would stand in front of them and pay attention to the sequence displayed in videos (even in an abstract manner). I wanted the pictures to be experienced during the easy and free movement of audience, the same as visual experiencing of a painting exhibition. One of the correct mechanisms of a video work in a gallery is the accurate understanding of the addressee’s visual perception and confrontation. Secondly, I adopted an arrangement and a strategy in the audience’s moving up and down in a way that they do not get tired from the frequent repetition of all these identical portraits. For this purpose where our biggest monitor displayed a nine-meter portrait on the salon ground and the musician performed on which was designed proportionate to the music piece and the crisis intensity that the countenance expressed and encountered hard with. Little by little we exercised visually on the woman’s face to make the outer representation of the incident she experienced from inside visible. First we made the voice quiver. By the special effects my comrade, Masoud Dolatyari, had designed for tension of frozen sounds, the woman’s voice conveyed cold as far as her face was freezing; exactly like a woman surrounded by cold and not able to move her jaw and face to utter words anymore. Words in this case were heard not completely, with a cold vibration of sounds which left them imperfect. And on the following step, freezing the face was my good friend’s job (Pejman Zahab) in this direction. We tried in this bewilderment that face does not tend to exaggerate, or in simple words not annoy the audience while they’re visiting. Therefore snowfall gradually covered the woman’s face along with the wind blowing and the countenance froze under the light snow and cracked. By the red blood coming out of her nose, the intensity of the catastrophe became manifest. But I guess we could have expressed this destruction poetically. I hate making the addressee too much sensitive and dislike works which make them cry or cause mental fluctuations due to probable violence. In my opinion such works take away the power to distinguish and understand the work from audience. Meanwhile the addressee cannot recreate the work in him/her nor have a good analysis of that. What he or she takes home in such an experience is only the emotional function of it and that’s not enough in my view. Work of art needs to penetrate the deeper layers of the addressee’s mind. Emotions and process of making the audience sensitive should only be applied in motivating him for enthusiasm and taking whom into experience; and not only be regarded as the main objective of work.
Language is a central point in your work. Please explain the reasons for this lingual deconstruction in your work?
You pointed to an important factor. Language consists of conventional signs for conveying a massage first. Sometimes we try to narrate our personal experiences or in other words those private fields of ours by means of these signs. The depth of the experience expressed by language and the way of confronting the audience to hear them are really important in the influence of such fields. But language, due to its conventional nature, makes joint memories in general field too. There are still some words reminiscent of days and sometimes shocking experiences for a generation. Uttering them is the awakening or stimulating words’ general fields. What I was looking for in this performance was the narration of a memory in private realm by language. In this connection,I tried to get closer gradually to a more general field of language function by deconstructing the words which could remind us of collective memories. The woman narrates her personal memory of a bitter experience in a romanticfailure. There are some words which refer to her to another memory among the great number words by which she expresses her memoirs. They constantly disorder the linear narration of the woman through the expression of personal memory. The woman stops on this word. I tried to make the audience sensitive to these words by their purposeful repetition and lingual dissection. I conformed the executive form of this lingual deconstruction to mechanism of remembering the levels of voluntary and involuntary memories. Therefore the audience gradually knew about a deeper memory of her experiences which he had in a way or another in the mind.
As the last question: we know that the performance was executed in January. We heard in the woman’s dialogs things as this: … Is it snowing outside? … Is it cold or not? There was a connection between the cold season you’d chosen for the performance and the work’s atmosphere. Wasn’t there?
The audience went out of the work through an emotion of the woman’s inner cold. January weather could keep that emotion in him or her for some time. Snow is really a miracle. Its wonder is not in falling, but in the feeling it creates in one. It makes a strange scene; everything changes; a feeling that attracts one unconsciously toward window. Watching the outer space from behind gray and white colors and the smell of moisture provides a unique chance for contemplation, or better to say, a wonderful opportunity for thinking. In a condition like this, conversation, drinking coffee and generally any form of experience takes another meaning. We should not forget that thinking to anxieties and apprehensions in most cases requires special condition, exactly like writing which demands so. I was lucky that in the inauguration day and a few days after that, it was snowy and wet. In this condition, you could pull your coat’s collar up and see nobody; you could walk on snow along a street or alley while accompanying the sounds.
